A short “Grand Theft Alto” (2014) Write-up

compactdisksadomasochism:

Cult Classic* GRAND THEFT ALTO has recieved an update?! What?! I decided to make a few fixes because it’s been bugging me.

This update finally restores some cut features to their full glory. See the link for full changelog. I decided not to change my old name from the credits, because to me it wouldn’t make sense that an old game would have a name I didn’t use at that time.

Also, did you know? All versions of Grand Theft Alto allow for cheat codes to be entered? But I kept it secret. Enough time has passed, though, so, I might as well reveal them:

Run faster: ⬆⬆⬇⬇⬅➡⬅➡⬅➡⬅➡

Get present without cop: ⬆⬆ABAB⬆⬆Z

Raise Water Level (stacks:) ZAZACBAC(⬆x12)

Toggle HUD: ⬆⬇⬆⬇CAAB

HOT COFFEE: ⬆⬇⬅➡⬇⬆➡⬅ZAA

Reload world (required to spawn hot coffee): ⬆⬆⬇⬇⬆⬇⬆⬇ZZZZBBBBACAC⬆

Increase speed NPCs lose health when near you: ➡⬅➡⬅⬅➡⬆⬇⬇⬆⬅➡➡⬅A

If you’re wondering what Hot Coffee is, it unlocks a strip club in the city. This building was cut because I found the idea was too much, and there were issues with how it worked, so this bit was cut, and only accessible with a cheat code that only I had. Also, everyone in the strip club is fully clothed, while everyone else is in their pants. this is essentially the game’s punchline but it took me 2 years to realise this.

This post is evolving into something of a writeup. Errr, I’ll just keep going.

Anyway, this game feels “complete” now that all these features have been finished, and I’m going to leave it like this. This is my most-downloaded game, probably cause the premise is kinda funny and it’s got the star power. I started to hate this game the older it got, but replaying it today made me like it a little more.

The game’s also full of billboards that, instead of Grand Theft Auto’s double-entendre-laden billboards, which annoy the crap out of me let’s be honest here, just had single-entendres.

`The game’s front cover, too, does this. (Obviously.)

I thought it would be funny to flip gender relations on their head for the poster, and for various conversations in the game. There’s a Gone Home poster on the wall- this game was made for Ruin Jam, which was celebrating these kinds of unusual, personal, less-violent games. I wanted the front cover to make a statement, by showing all these elements, as if to subvert the original GTA poster and show that the time had come, to push against the kind of male-dominated gaming culture the original poster epitomised. I also made it so you play as a woman, something uncommon in Grand Theft Auto.

Other things that are flipped that you may not have noticed: If you die you respawn at a police station, rather than a hospital. Cars drive on roofs, rather than the ground. Avoiding people hurts them, and shooting people heals them. If you pass a cop without shooting them, you gain a star.

ONE OTHER THING about this game- this was made in 2014, but contained references to two real-life people. Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump.

In Grand Theft Alto, Hillary Clinton is the President, and Donald Trump is poor (or this game’s equivalent of poor, at least. He lives in Trump Tower, but it’s full of monsters.) So, this begs the question: Is Grand Theft Alto’s bizarre vision of the future TRUE? Or is it FALSE? Since the game is set in a reversed version of the world, does this mean Trump will be president- the opposite of what he is in the game?

So as a closing thought: Don’t let Donald Trump be president. This game contains a warning.

*Not actually a cult classic, but got youtube’d a couple of times

I wanted to make a VN system so I made one and tested out some expressions. They’re all hand drawn, and the faces are seperate to the body. You’ll also notice the background gets a filter during a cutscene, and loses the filter when its over.

Now that I can do alpha FX & antialiasing I am going wild with it and making anything I can use to test ‘em out so I couldn’t resist something like this and trying to make it look flashy.

D.S.A is out!!! At long last!!! Available here —> http://thewaether.itch.io/dsa

If you’re interested in a game about 3 girls in a band lost on a giant college campus while on a drug trip, full of painful 90′s music references, then this game is ideal for you.

This game is huge, it’s full of secrets, surreal people and places, and a deep story. It plays like a cross between a point and click adventure and an action game, and the gameplay varies a lot.

I’ve been working on this game for 5 years and it’s been a huge part of my life and very important to me. It’s got a rough art style, but don’t be tricked into thinking this is a rush job, this game is huge and detailed and took a ton of effort to make. I worked on it pretty much every day and it feels like a miracle that’s it’s finally done.

I also did the game’s main soundtrack, which is 55 tracks big and also took a lot of effort. On the whole I think this is the biggest, and best written thing I’ve done in my life so far, and I’m glad I’m finally getting to show it.
