HP fandom gushing & stuff
So, one year today OOTP came out. (Unless of course I’ve got the wrong date, but I hope not. ;) ) I’m wearing all black. Black socks, black trousers, black top (and yellow hoodie :p). I think everyone probably thinks I’m mad now.
So, I’ve been in HP fandom for a long time now. I’ve written some fanfiction both good and bad, read some fanfiction both good and bad, made a website, made LJ icons, made some friends, and generally rather enjoyed myself.
There is something about the HP fandom that’s unlike any other fandom I’ve been in, same as HP is unlike any other book I’ve read. I’m in Star Wars fandom too, and you have never seen Fandom Wankery until you’ve been there. (Not that I don’t still love it, but…) HP fandom is different. I don’t know why…we yell and flame and argue and moan and bicker over ships, but we still seem, mostly, like one very, very, very large family which occasionally has it’s members wanting to kill each other. The best example of this that I can think of right now is when JKR’s website came out and everyone was explaining on boards and journals how to get the easter eggs. Or when someone else bashes the HP fandom in a newspaper or such…hasn’t happened for ages, but when it does, we band together considerably quickly. Which is cool.
Anyway…why? Maybe because we’re the last people who’ll have this experience…all the speculating and waiting. Before long…although not as soon as we’d like…books 6 and 7 will come out and then it’ll all be over. The next generations won’t get to hang out on message boards reading all the R/H vs H/H arguements or wondering who’s evil and who’s not. JKR gave us a really interesting world with lots of really interesting characters, and we probably ought to enjoy them while we can. Which we are, I guess.
And, yes, that includes wearing black on June 21 to mourn the death of a fictional character. Yep. ;)
Eh. We need a fandom_gush. We have a fandom_wank, so why not?
