I’m sooooo glad you mentioned Electro briefly. I generally enjoyed Andrew Garfield as Spider Man, but the ending of 2 still haunts me. Electro was simply misunderstood and asking for help, but people treated him horribly because of his powers. Before it all he was just a lonely guy who idolized Spider Man, and that was spit in his face. And in the end? He dies. Like how horrible is that? Why would they end it that way?

It was actually just @sarah531 who mentioned him (I simply published her submission!) but I completely agree. The treatment of Electro was awful – while I’m not a Spiderman-comics reader, I’m assuming he’s not portrayed in the comics the same way he is in the movies.

But, we do have the new Spiderman movies coming out, so I’m hopeful that if characters like Harry or Electro come up, they will treat the characters with more respect than the other movies. I believe that while it isn’t perfect, they generally did a good job with Tony and his anxiety & PTSD, so I’m holding out hope that comic-canon mentally ill characters will be portrayed fairly accurately.

:)!

There’s some very good meta about ableism/racism re: asm2′s Electro over here. (The original blog has deactivated alas.)
