me: buries myself in the new characters from TFA in order to avoid processing my complicated and somewhat depressing emotions over how the legacy characters were handled

#yeah as much as I adore this film there is a small and deeply felt part of me#that doesn’t accept it as canon (x)

this sums up my emotions toward TFA perfectly

#it was a beautiful movie but i don’t count it in my canon

I have similar thoughts sometimes (this article sums most of them up, I think) and I really need to get round to writing them down. But my simple solution: Star Wars is a mythology, a great big sprawling one with lots of different authors, and there’s not really any such thing as canon. Want Rey/Finn/Poe to still exist, but don’t want Leia’s life to have descended into a nightmarish hellhole after ROTJ? Well, it’s a mythology! Who knows what “really happened”?

I recommend this process 100% for all your Star Wars needs.

So, treat Star Wars like it’s Doctor Who?

ExxxxxACTly.

I also recommend this process 100% for all your Doctor Who needs.
