That I’ve been a star wars fan for literally 20 years now, ever since my dad showed me “A New Hope” when I was 5? That I grew up playing with our model X Wing and Han Solo and Leia toys? I watched all the prequels in theaters and I rather enjoyed them when I was 12 (Though there is so much to fix.) I know all about the EU, about Mara Jade and Anakin Solo (despite them not really being canon anymore.)
I AM a Star Wars fan, just as much as you, and I’m really fucking happy about the new trio.
That’s cool but you’re pointing out the wrong points. You’re not pointing out their great acting, and the strong story line. You’re focusing on gender and ethnic background. I’m focusing on the kick ass job they did.
You know what, we’re not wrong in pointing out one aspect of the movie that we enjoyed.
I ENJOYED seeing Star Wars become more diverse. I ENJOYED seeing more people like me and my friends up there being X Wing pilots and Jedi. I ENJOYED that Rey got to be a hero, not only because she as a character is great, but because I know how hard it is to be a little girl in this fandom and having a girl as the Jedi Hero is a pretty big deal as far as validation goes.
Yes, I loved the homages and the references to the originals. I loved the plot reveals and the sound design and the snappy dialogue. I loved those iconic “swipe” transitions between scenes.
But it is not wrong to point out that I loved the casting choices, the increased visibility for minorities, and what that might mean for our fandom growing as a whole.
So, unless someone died and made you the “This Is How You Fandom Correctly” sheriff, fuck off. Because you weren’t invited to this post.
