Tatianna Rose and her friends invited friends to a cookout. Most of their friends also live there. They had every right to be there. Here she talks about what started all this.
[captions]
Tatianna: “My name is Tatianna Rose, um, yeah, so basically what happened was me and my sister and a few friends made a cookout, and, um, I- basically, to sum it up, when I went to go get my keypad from someone this lady was saying racial slurs to some friends that came to the cookout.”
Voice [offscreen]: “What kinda slurs was she sayin’?”
Tatianna: “She was saying things such as ‘Black effer, and that’s why you live in section 8 homes”. There was also a male that was saying, uh, rude things, and this 14 year old girl named Grace, which is my brother’s friend, stuck up for us saying “That’s not right, you shouldn’t do that! That’s racist!” and things like that. So then they started, um, verbally abusing her, saying that she needs to do better for herself, be better for herself, cursing at her, and I’m saying “No that’s wrong! She’s 14! You should not say things like that to a 14 year old!” and they’re like “Um, well you need to go back where you’re from” and things like that, telling me, um, I need to go back to my section 8 home and stuff like that. So, um, I said “Excuse me?” and then the other lady, her name’s Kate, came up to me and she smacked me in my face. She-”
Voice [offscreen]: “That’s Kate the white lady?”
Tatianna: “Kate’s caucasian. And she hit me in my face and that’s when both of the women attacked me.”
Voice [offscreen]: “OK, and just for clarity- you live in this neighborhood?”
Tatianna: “Yes, I live in Craneridge [?].”
Voice [offscreen]: “OK, most of the other people who attended the event also live in Craneridge? Is that right?”
Tatianna: “Yes.”
Voice [offscreen]: “Right, OK. And Mom, did you want to say anything?”
Lashawna Burks: “My name is Lashawna Burks.”
Voice [offscreen]: “Yes, ma’am.”
Lashawna: “I’m- I’m just upset that we couldn’t have a peaceful event, and if there was any issues that they truly had, they should have came to me, the adult, that was here at the event, and said ‘Hey, you know, we don’t want the kids’, whatever, and let me handle it, and NOT go to that extreme.”
Voice [offscreen]: “Right. And most of the kids here were, like, classmates of them that were invited. Things of that nature, so like in the area.”
Lashawna: “Classmates, classmates, classmates, right. So it was, like, food and everything, it was…” [distracted by someone calling her daughter]
Voice [offscreen]: “Yes Ma’am. Thank you, I appreciate it.”
