Nurse Rory vs Centurion Rory is one of the better things Season Six did, I reckon-
Especially since in damn near every episode of the first half of the season, Rory takes a moment to clarify he’s a nurse, taking care of people is a huge part of him- and then this episode happens, and through no fault of his own he’s failed to take care of his own family. And then he doesn’t reply when Strax tells him he’s a nurse- originally he was meant to say “me too” but they cut it, and I’m really glad they did, because I think something in Rory died during this episode…he doesn’t mention he’s a nurse again for ages.
I always get sad when people emphasize centurion!Rory instead of nurse!Rory as the embodiment of what a badass Rory is because the show made it clear that is NOT the side of himself that he enjoys; rather, it’s something that he can draw upon in times of extreme need when he needs to protect his loved ones. Series 6 was all about identity for each of the four main characters, and your point that Rory doesn’t bring up the nurse thing for awhile is an extremely interesting observation, especially since he seems slightly defensive about it in The Power of Three.
Ooh, yes, exactly!
One tiny little detail I’ve always loved regarding Centurion!Rory is, during A Good Man Goes To War when he’s in Stormcage with River, he mentions how he “look[s] ridiculous”. As The Last Centurion, he’s passed into legend, travelled the universe, blown up the Cybermen, and passed into legend again– but when he’s on his own, just him and the woman he doesn’t know is his daughter, he doesn’t care about any of that. He thinks he looks silly. Oh Rory.
